Your First Pickleball Gear Checklist
Pickleball does not need much gear. The trick is buying the right things in the right order, and skipping the rest until you are sure you will stick with it.
Borrow first
Many clubs, rec centers and parks keep loaner paddles and balls. Play a few sessions before you buy a paddle, so you can find out what weight and feel you like.
Buy in this order
- Court shoes. They give you the support to move side to side safely, and they are the piece most worth getting right.
- A paddle. Start with a mid-priced option from a reputable brand.
- Balls that match where you play, indoor or outdoor.
- A water bottle and sun protection for outdoor sessions.
- Eye protection. Balls travel fast at the net, and it is a cheap safeguard.
