Do You Really Need Pickleball Shoes?
Short answer: you need a court shoe, not necessarily a pickleball shoe. The difference matters more than the label.
Why running shoes fall short
Running shoes are built for moving forward in a straight line. Pickleball is mostly side-to-side steps, quick stops and small pivots. Running shoes tend to have a tall, cushioned heel and a softer upper, which can roll under you when you push off sideways.
What to look for
- Lateral support, meaning a firm upper and a stable, fairly flat base.
- A durable outsole, since rough outdoor courts wear soles down quickly.
- Non-marking soles if you play in a gym or on indoor courts.
- A snug heel and a roomy toe box, so your foot does not slide.
Tennis and other court shoes work well
Tennis, volleyball and indoor court shoes share the same lateral design, so any of them is a solid choice. Pickleball-specific shoes are often court shoes with small tweaks, so treat the label as a bonus rather than a requirement.
Paying less
- Last year’s colors are usually the same shoe for less.
- Broken size runs at the ends of the range are often marked down first.
- Buy from a seller with an easy return policy, and try shoes at home on a clean floor before wearing them outside.
Fit first, price second. A discount does not help if the shoe does not fit your foot.
